Why Choose a Granite Worktop for Your Kitchen?

When it comes to picking a kitchen worktop more and more people are leaning towards granite. But what is it about a granite worktop that makes it perfect for so many kitchens? In truth there is not just one but many qualities that make granite a perfect choice for your kitchen. If you’re considering replacing old kitchen worktops with something new, here are some reasons to consider granite.

The Benefits of Granite Kitchen Worktops

Granite is a natural stone often cut into slabs before being cut and polished to specific sizes. Granite is an igneous rock, making it’s composition tough. It is formed in hot magma flows well over its melting point of around 1250°C so a hot pan isn’t likely to do it much damage. It is this durability and hardiness that makes granite worktops so popular.

As well as being resistant to heat marks granite is equally suited to brushing off water. Well-sealed granite is not porous, meaning that liquids will not be able to soak into, or through, the surface. This means that there is also little chance of bacteria, grime, or leftover food making a home of the worktop. A simple wipe down of the top will work wonders. This makes granite a popular choice for a kitchen island or breakfast bar where food can be both prepared and eaten.

Granite worktops are also visually appealing. Granite offers a sophisticated and professional kitchen finish and comes in a wide array of colours, meaning you’re more than likely to find a tone right for your kitchen. Darker colours are particularly popular as they will hide marks or wear and tear.

Are There Downsides to a Worktop in Granite?

The durability, versatility and beauty of granite ensure it will remain a popular kitchen staple for some time. The downsides are few, but worth keeping in mind if you do settle on this worktop material. Firstly, if the counter is incorrectly sealed, or isn’t resealed regularly enough, liquids, grime and stains will be able to soak into the stone. This can cause very tough stains, alongside bacterial issues.

As well as this, granite is not always uniform, so each slab may differ slightly in appearance. Lastly, granite is quite an expensive material, so you’ll need to make sure a granite worktop fits within the budget you have.
