You may be planning a new kitchen, and if so, you have quite a lot to think about. According to one estimate, the average Brit will spend over three years in the kitchen during their lifetime. So, before you fix your plans, take some time to decide how you want to use your kitchen.

Here at Albany Kitchens we’ve been helping customers create their dream kitchens since 1990. Because we’re a family-run business, we understand how important this room will be for you and your family. From colour coordination to layout, the possibilities are endless. But we can help you every step of the way.

New Kitchen Design

Consider your budget

Before you start planning properly, you need to have a good idea of what you can afford to spend. It’s therefore advisable to take a look at your plumbed-in and electrical appliances. The cost of extending water pipes or electric cables to new areas may affect your budget.

What do you need from your new kitchen?

Take a look at your existing kitchen and decide what’s right about it and what isn’t. That way, you can incorporate the elements that you like into your new design. For example, you may want to keep the cooker where it is as it’s close to available workspace. On the other hand, if you need more storage, look for areas where you could put extra wall units.

Kitchens are often busy, so make sure there’s enough space for people to move around each other. Alternatively, is there a partition wall you could remove to create a more open kitchen diner? Also consider whether you want all the units against the walls, or if a kitchen island might be better.

What’s your style?

Nowadays kitchen’s are available in all kinds of styles, and the design of your new kitchen is up to you. Your ideas will probably be influenced by the kind of house you live in. For example, if it’s a rustic rural cottage, you may want to reflect that in the style of your kitchen. On the other hand, a sleek and modern kitchen in a traditional setting can look stunning.

It might help to take magazine cuttings of kitchens you like, to find ideas you may not have thought of. Alternatively, visit our showroom in Bishop’s Stortford and take a look at German kitchen design for some added inspiration.

Extra appliances

It’s a good idea to choose your appliances according to your needs. If you have a large family, a double oven could make life a whole lot easier. Or if you struggle for refrigerator space, why not consider a large American-style fridge. Alternatively, a mini fridge full of snacks is always a crowd-pleaser. And there’s certainly no rule book that says you can’t have two microwave ovens.
